000Webhost Review: How to Create a WordPress Blog for Free

000webhost review

Lately, I’ve been writing about free blogging sites because I know not everyone wants to invest in hosting and domain.

First, they want to try it. And these platforms let you do just that. If you have been following Infosmush, you know that up till now I’ve written guides on how to create and set up (free) blogs on WordPress.com, Wix, Tumblr, and Blogger.

One of the free blogging platforms that I recommend is Blogger. The reason is that you can host a custom domain for free and there is a lot of premium looking third-party themes that can be installed and modified. And you can hide the Blogger logo.

Although 000Webhost offers everything that Blogger does it has a few drawbacks that we will discuss later.

Who Owns 000Webhost?

000Webhost is owned by Hostinger– a web host company & domain registrar.

They are able to offer free hosting because they constantly remind users what they are missing and charge for upgrades.

To be honest, most people wouldn’t mind buying hosting at just $28/year. Most domain names cost $10/year so the total cost for 1 year is $38.

If the service is good those users will stick around. The fact that they are still in business after more than 10 years when almost everyone is recommending Bluehost, Hostgator, Siteground, it has to be good.

Why Should You Create a 000Webhost Blog?

Well, with 000Webhost you can create a subdomain blog or host a custom domain and install WordPress on the server.

WordPress.org is an open-source content management system software. Most blogs and website use WordPress to manage their content and the reason is the plugins. The real power of WordPress comes from plugins which make a lot of things easy and possible especially for those who aren’t programmers.

Usually, you’d need to buy a hosting service and then install WordPress. But with 000Webhost you can get a WordPress experience for free.

You can create a blog on 000Webhost to run a subdomain blog or just to get some experience before launching your WordPress blog.

000Webhost is the best place to gain some experience before upgrading. You get to use WordPress for free. If you have the money to buy hosting which is quite cheap(for new customers), why would you waste your time on any free blogging platform?

You should only use blogger/000webhost with or without a custom domain if you can’t afford to buy a hosting service which costs less than $30 for the first year.

If you buy a hosting service from Hostinger you can get 76% off for the first year- $28. If you buy the 4-year plan you can get it for $38.

The hosting plans for new users are so cheap that almost anyone can afford it. But like all companies as soon as your first plan ends Hostinger will increase.

So the best use of 000Webhost is to get accustomed to how WordPress works. So you can set up your site/blog quickly.

The reason I say this is because Blogging is not cheap. And you could be working for 1-3 years before you start earning anything. So it’s a good idea to get some experience in using WordPress. Because you will not only have to write posts but keep your content secure and deal with a number of errors.

Even if you already have a WordPress site you can use 000Webhost to experiment.

For example, if you want to change your theme you can customize the theme on your free 000webhost site and then upload it on your primary blog.

After you have gained some experience buy hosting from Hostinger or any other company. And since you know about a lot of things you wouldn’t have any problem setting up your blog.

I hope you are able to create your website quickly. When I was trying to create one it always gave a server error, it took 3 days before I was able to create a site. But the next website was created instantly. So I guess they have solved the issue.

If you face the same issue you won’t be able to create your site at the time registration. And when you create your site you will be given the option build site using Zyro, WordPress, Wix or by uploading your own website:

create new website

7. Click on WordPress. It will about take 2 minutes for the installation to be completed.

8. Click on Go to Configuration Page

9. Now enter your username and password to log in.

wordpress login

In the future, you will have to visit yoursite.000webhostapp.com/wp-login.php to log in again. If you have already logged in, you need to head over to https://yoursite.000webhostapp.com/wp-admin/.

10. This is how your WordPress dashboard will look after closing all Hostinger banners which will appear every time you visit your WordPress dashboard or any other section (It’s annoying, to say the least).

11. You have successfully installed WordPress on your 000Webhost blog. Now you need to change a few things before you can start publishing posts.

Set up 000Webhost WordPress Blog:

By default, your blog has Twenty Nineteen(name of the WordPress theme) theme applied. Depending on your preferences you might want to change the theme.

To add a new theme go to Appearance -> Themes -> and then click Add New.

wordpress theme

You’ll be taken to the Add Themes page. Here, search and find a theme that you like. Most themes allow a lot of customizations. So what you see in the preview are just one of the designs that can be created using the theme. Some of the most flexible WordPress themes are OceanWP, Divi, Astra, Beaver Builder.

wordpress download theme

After you install a theme click Activate-> Customize to activate and customize it.

activate and customize theme

You can also download themes from other websites and upload them.

Don’t fall for premium themes available for free download on some shady website. They harm your website or your whole computer.

It’ll take some time to get used to the customizer- to know what each option does. Remember this is a free site and you can reset it anytime. So don’t sweat about breaking your theme. The main purpose of these sites is to gain experience as beginners. So mess around to your heart’s content.

Plugins are the main things that give WordPress its power. 000Webhost doesn’t allow many inodes and disk space so you can’t install many plugins but there are some essentials.

Yoast SEO: It is an SEO plugin that will help you improve your sites SEO. It also has a blog that will help you learn more about SEO and using the Yoast plugin.

Updraft: Updraft is a backup plugin. It has both free and premium versions. The free version is good enough. remember to set up a remote storage location else all the data will be stored on your server which already has a limit of 1GB.

Permalinks are URLs of your posts. They also play an important role in the SEO of your blog. One of the best URL structures is this: domain.com/url.

To change the permalink structure of your blog:

1. Go to Settings -> Permalinks

2. And select Post name from Common Settings.

Write Your First Blog Post:

WordPress uses Block Editor- Gutenberg which can be confusing for anyone who hasn’t used a similar editor. But trust me once you get the hang of it it’s great.

wordpress post editor

As you keep using the editor you’ll know all its features. But to save your time here a few things that will help you:

  • Every block has its own setting. For example, you can change a paragraph blocks background color, text color, font size, etc.
  • You can drag and move blocks up or down.
  • You can also add blocks to reusable blocks to use the same blocks with the same formatting again.
  • Blocks can be duplicated.
  • you can do much more. For the complete guide visit here.

There are also many plugins that come with more blocks to make things like creating buttons and other designs easy.

Before you publish your posts go to Document settings and edit the permalink, categories, tags and other settings.

Pros of 000Webhost:

  • Well it’s free
  • You can build your site with Zyro, Wix, WordPress or upload your own site.
  • You can create up to two site
  • You get two databases
  • cPanel(not complete)
  • Monthly quota of 10GB bandwidth which is more than enough for most blogs and sites. Unless you want a lot of high-quality videos and graphics on your website.
  • Forum where you can ask questions.

Cons of 000Webhost:

  • Just 1 GB of disk space. Which is enough for just experimenting.
  • Limit of 20,000 inodes.
  • The problem that all free hosting sites have. You don’t own the domain or the blog. They can terminate the website anytime without any notice.
  • A limit of 500 RPM(Requests Per Minute). A request is a when a request is sent to the server to retrieve a file like images, javascript, CSS, text. Etc. So depending on the type of content, your blog has it won’t be able to handle much visitors.
  • Sometimes the 00website itself doesn’t load.
  • 000Webhost logo is displayed at the bottom of your site.
  • No support

Here’s What I Recommend:

Let’s start by considering Blogger and 000webhost for hosting a custom domain:

Like I said before both Blogger and 000Webhost allow you to host a domain for free for as long as you want.

But which one is better?

I would say both.

Well, the main issue with Blogger is that it can be shut down at any time. And the second is that the permalink of your blog posts always contains date and .html at the end(blog.blogspot.com/2017/07/post.html). Which is bad for SEO and looks ugly. And when you finally move to WordPress you will either have to keep the same permalink structure or change it then set up redirects.

But if you choose 000Webhost to host your website you can install WordPress. You have complete control over permalink structure, plugins to make your job easy and thousands of themes to make your blog look more professional.

The few drawbacks are limited inodes, just 1GB of storage and occasional site down.

But the biggest one that may force you to think again is Webhost logo that hangs around at the bottom of your screen.

But if you want to create a free subdomain blog 000Webhost is the better option. Because a free blog can only take you so far. If you are serious about blogging you will have to move to paid hosting. With 000Webhost you can get the WordPress experience that will be helpful later on.

And moving to paid hosting is also super easy. You can simply buy WordPress hosting from Hostinger and enter your website address and they will transfer your website for you.

Hello! Do you know if they make any plugins to help with SEO? I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good gains. If you know of any please share. Kudos!|
